As you plan to eat a healthier diet, you may read about all kinds of diets and fads. Of course, you will want to make sure that you read the eating plans. Most of these will cut out high sugar foods and foods that are high in carbs and sugar. However, you may be surprised to learn that there are foods that are healthy that you thought were not. These foods are perfect for you to eat even though you didn't know they were.
Pizza:
Did you know that pizza is not as bad for you as you might have thought? Now, before you get excited and order a double pepperoni pizza, you should know that SOME pizzas are better for you than you thought - especially if you make the pizza at home. You can make the crust using whole grains and add your favorite lean meats (such as Canadian bacon, turkey pepperoni or chicken) and your favorite veggies. Top with low fat mozzarella and you have yourself and healthy pizza. If you are eating out, then skip the sausage and pepperoni and order thin crust pizza with bell peppers, tomatoes, and mushrooms.
Chocolate:
You are probably excited to learn that chocolate is actually good for you. You have probably heard that dark chocolate (in small servings) can help your heart and circulation. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and the darker the chocolate, the better it is for you. If you love dark chocolate, buy a supply and have a small piece each day without feeling guilty. You can even get your daily chocolate fix by drinking hot chocolate (just use low fat milk).
Nuts:
There are all kinds of nuts that are tasty - and they are good for you. Peanuts, walnuts, cashews and pistachios all top the list. These are high fat, but high in the right kind of fat. They are also high in protein and if you do not eat a lot of meat, then adding nuts to your diet is a good idea. Peanut butter is also a great choice, especially if you choose natural peanut butter, which is low in sugar.
Salsa:
Salsa is very good for you. It is full of fresh vegetables and it is low in fat. In addition, cilantro contains antibacterial properties, too. When you want to eat salsa, just remember that tortilla chips are not so good for you, so eat it with other foods (such as adding it to your scrambled eggs) or eat baked tortilla chips. You can make your own tortilla chips by baking tortillas and using them instead of high fat chips.
Potatoes:
While you will never get anyone to tell you that fried potatoes are good for you, some potatoes are. Russet potatoes are great for your healthy diet. They are low in fat and full of antioxidants, which can help fight disease. Baked potatoes are also good for you when you fill them with good-for-you toppings like low fat or no fat sour cream and broccoli.
