Allergic Rhinitis Problems

Allergic rhinitis is similar to cold symptoms (runny nose, congestion or sneezing). But, unlike colds, hay fever isn't caused by a virus, but is an allergic response to certain substances found in the environment.

You have symptoms of seasonal allergies that occur or worsen in a certain time of year and are caused by pollen, grass or other plants. If you suffer from this illness, know that you are not alone / a, is common. May might not completely get rid of these symptoms, but their treatment and prevention can be very helpful.


Signs and symptoms of allergic rhinitis symptoms can change from the mild to severe. But you may also have more severe symptoms that will last from 4 days to 4 weeks.

Chronic congestion may cause facial pressure and pain, can affect your senses like smell and taste. The skin under the eyes may be swollen and reddened.

Symptoms usually occur immediately after exposure to certain substances that cause allergies (allergens). Common allergens include pollen, dust, cockroach or some animal. Sometimes, exposure to certain substances such as perfume or cigarette smoke can trigger or worsen symptoms.

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis may include:

* Stuffy nose;
* Watery eyes;
* Congestion;
* Frequent sneezing;
* Itchy eyes, nose, mouth or throat;
* Cough;
* Facial pressure and pain.

Allergic rhinitis may cause:

* Drowsiness;
* Fatigue;
* Irritability.

Regardless of the allergen, the consequences are the same. During the process of sensitization, the immune system makes a mistake and identify allergens as invaders, producing an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE).

Next time you're exposed to allergens, the immune system launches an allergic reaction. IgE-producing substances that trigger inflammation, histamine, causing swelling of mucous membranes of the nose, sinuses and eyes.

Seasonal allergies can be caused by:

* Pollen from trees, flowers, spring;
* Grass pollen, late spring and summer;
* Weed pollen in autumn.

Perennial allergies may be caused by:

* Dust;
* Animals (dandruff, hair and skin);
* Cockroaches;
* Mould.

Risk Factors

* The existence of cases of allergic rhinitis in the family;
* The first child born in family;
* Exposure to tobacco smoke in the first year of life;
* Exposure to dust.

If you have symptoms that occur occasionally, but have not disappeared with drugs recommended by the pharmacist, go to the doctor for treatment.
Go to the doctor if:

* Symptoms persist;
* Medication had no effect or side effects;
* In addition to allergic rhinitis, suffer from diseases such as nasal polyps, asthma or sinus infections;
* If your child has allergic rhinitis, immunotherapy may help prevent the onset of asthma.
