For sufferers of chronic back pain, it is an obvious statement to call the problem excruciating. Unfortunately, many people live with lingering and chronic back pain for years without doing anything to fix the issue. This does not have to be the case. The reason most people will not do anything about the problem is that they believe back surgery is too expensive, unpredictable, and rarely effective. Many back surgery procedures of the past have been poor and ineffective. However there are now treatments that are less invasive and longer lasting.
Doctors have known for many years that the true cause of back pain is often related to cartilage breakdown. When two individual vertebra disks have worn cartilage they can begin to rub against each other, or as is more commonly the case, expose a nerve to external stimuli. Because the spinal cord is so full of nerves, one exposure can lead to a sensory overload and lasting pain.
Back surgery procedures in the current medical climate have been aimed at fixing the problem. On the farthest side of technology and science, surgeons are learning to regrow cartilage. This obviously would help the problem, and the process is invasive, expensive and not perfected. Immediate surgeries that can help include sponge implants and fluid scopes. Both treatments aim to cushion worn out cartilage and establish a shock absorber in the patients back. The recovery process for such treatments is usually only a few days and the treatment can last for up to a year. The process is inexpensive and the results are lauded.
